What I’m
Reading:
Blue Sisters: I’ve been listening to this rather than reading it, but either way, it’s worth grabbing a copy. The story follows four sisters (their surname is Blue). They grew up in New York and have all kind of gone their own way: a lawyer, a boxer, a model, and Nicky—the one who died twelve months ago. When their parents decide to sell the apartment, the sisters reunite and try to heal. The writing is just lovely. A sister and storyline for everyone.
Recently, I’ve also been reading:
ROMANCE:
Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry — great premise on this one, a young journalist applies to write the biography of a reclusive socialite with a mysterious past. Turns out, the ageing socialite hasn’t committed as to who will write her biography—she’s asked a young man to pitch for the gig as well. A charming romance where the characters are fun, the setting is gorgeous and the unpacking of the past and the present timelines works perfectly.
What I’m Watching, TV :
The Secrets We Keep — a Netflix Scandi drama about a missing au pair. This reminded me a little of Expats with Nicole Kidman, but it certainly holds its own. An unnerving mystery about privilege, exploitation and secrets.
More watches: Poker Face—always a fun, Columbo-style romp. Maybe my favourite new watch would be Project UFO (Netflix). So quirky. Wes Anderson with way more integrity and story.
What I’m Watching, FILM :
Sorrentino’s Parthenope is a masterpiece of a film. It’s had some odd reviews, and if you’re looking for action, you are in the wrong place, but this is a beautifully observed, deftly delivered observation on ageing, Italy and life.
More watches: The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson—not worth the ticket price. Lacking story. Mightily disappointed by this one. I’m normally a bit of an Anderson fan, but this felt indulgent.
